WorkinRomania reopens: what companies hiring non-EU workers need to know
After a long wait, the WorkinRomania portal is making a comeback. But what does this actually mean for companies in need of workers?
WorkinRomania.gov.ro is the electronic platform through which employers register or obtain authorization to hire foreign workers and through which the procedures for employing them are carried out. Without it, the process comes to a halt.
The past few weeks have been difficult for many employers in manufacturing, construction, HoReCa and services. Some of the platform's functions have been unavailable, recruitment processes have come to a standstill, and foreign workers already going through the process have faced the risk of missing legal deadlines through no fault of their own.
The good news: the platform is expected to be operational again by mid-November. At the same time, the Ministry of Labour is proposing to expand the List of Shortage Occupations from 289 to nearly 400 occupations and reduce the timeframe for adding new occupations to 10 days.
On Friday, October 30, the Ministry of Labour held a consultation on changes to the methodology for updating the List of Shortage Occupations. Through AFSRU, the association of which Prohuman is a founding member, our colleague Alexandru Ionescu took part in the discussions and highlighted:
🔹 hundreds of positions that have remained unfilled since August;
🔹 a concrete proposal: an occupation should be eligible for inclusion on the List of Shortage Occupations based on active employment contracts with Romanian and EU citizens recorded in REGES-ONLINE, rather than contracts concluded by the end of 2025.
Reopening the platform does not automatically mean fast access to non-EU workers
Any company looking to hire non-EU workers must register on the platform, either as a registered employer or an authorized employer. Many companies will be doing so in the coming weeks, and each application must be reviewed. The first few months will require patience.
What can companies do now?
Every company faces a different situation: the occupations it needs to fill, the number of workers required and the deadlines involved. That is why the first step is to assess the options realistically available to you under the current legal framework. We can help you understand which approach best suits your needs, from recruitment to worker integration, while working together to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
